My relationship with Doc Marten boots began when my dad bought me a pair. After school, before going to art college, I worked on a furniture van, and he reckoned I needed sturdy footwear! My younger sister used to work at the old DM factory in Northampton (when it was called Griggs). Then, as The Specials, we adopted the boots and the shoes as part of our look. I have worn them constantly ever since. I collaborated with them to create a pair of ‘cassette boots’ and also did an 8’ painting/collage to hang in the stairwell of their flag store in Camden. The image I painted was of a pair of my own worn boots. The image on the tee is a pared down version of that painting.
